Antonio x hail! Thy heavy ages

Tells sadly of the past;

For thy dark tale on history's page

Runs blood from first to last

Thy crumbling walls, thy ruined towers,

dark monuments, remain,

Of contest fierce 'twixt adverse powers

And countless numbers slain

Nor is it strange, ev'en from the first

Thy destinie's were given

To cowl-capp's Monks of blood accurst,

Who mock'd at God in heaven.

The Almighty in his wrath

Smote with avenging hand,

And bloody carnage strew'd each path,

In thy devoted land.

'Tis sorrowful to see now,

Thy rich luxuriant soil

The scene of nought but strife & woe,

And savage Indian broil.

Even when I stand, thy Alamo

Is crimson'd with the blood

Of the brave, who battled with the foe

When tens to thousands stood
