C began to roll about in the heavens & heavy gusts of wind from N.E. accompanied with forked & sheet lightening & the biggest thunder I had ever heard. The Tankeway Indians wished us to go to their camp, for heavy drops of rain were falling, but we had lost so much time it 'heading' & crossing the creek that we feared if we did not push on, we should not get to our destination & have to sleep in the woods & moreover we had no provisions with us. We had not gone a mile when torrents of rain fell, with heavy gusts of wind, lightening & thunder & almost dark ink black clouds. The wind amongst the trees roared like the tempestuous billows dashing on a rocky coast & now & then was heard the crash of a tree falling. This continued about an hour, when the tropical visitation cleared away, the sun shone out & rain-bow after rain-bow appeared. I must not omit mentioning
