There is only one store for dry goods in town, & this was full of Tonkeways, bartering their Buffalo robes, deer skins, Moccasins &c, for Powder, cotton stuffs Read's & such like finery for their Squaws & an occasional bottle of Whiskey from the tippling shop; this last is against executive orders. Onf of the Indians was a very ugly likiness of Mr Macready the actor. At Bastrop I found a countryman Mr N __ for whose attentions I feel obliged. I had the honor of an introduction to the Vice-President of Texas General Barbeson, who invited me on my return from Austin to pay him a visit.
