the pretty little town of Mackinaw, lying on the beach at its foot, very compact, not half a mile in extent it is supported by fisheries and [unclear] trade with vessels; some very large trouts were brought to the boat; the Indians about that regions were in the town that day to receive their annuities, some had their faces painted many wore blankets and in the shops were many Indians curiosities. the last day (Sunday) it was rough I was quite sick- did not seem at all like Sabbath; arrived at Racine just as mine host was going to evening meeting; was received very cordially; one of the other teachers going back from here 40 miles, stopped with me stays two days waiting for the stage; she goes tomorrow morning so I have not been left alone till I have time to get a little acquainted.

Went into school to day I think I shall find myself pleasantly situated; took a walk to the bank of the lake it is a lovely spot here, large oak trees scattered about, bank of the city is a fine growth of timber, and three miles back of that, a beautiful rolling prairie dotted here and there with houses and clumps of trees. This family have not had the fever & ague at all and few here do. I shall be a little careful about evening air at first. I feel glad I have come, have no doubt I shall be able to do more good than I could have done there; it is said and probably with smile, that a judicious Christian teacher can do more good than the home Missionary, having access to minds from which prejudice excludes the minister. I am resolved to keep up firm hearts not to let my thoughts dwell too much on home for that makes the tears flow; do write s soon as you get this; at the best it will be nearly a month before I can hear; I want you should all write some to me in the same letter: much love to all
            Ann.
