Leaving this wild & interesting spot we passed along the brink of the chasm & through a quaking asp unclear for about a mile when the trail suddenly dived down into its depths. I had sent Joe forward a half hour before & when he met me he was in despair. Recommended me to go into camp & send out to find a way - as the route before us was impassible for wagons 0 Leaving the Com'd I struck off on the trail - down into the depths. It was truly impassible for we could with difficulty get down
