but unclear family - none Rumsey. I left Racine last Mond. morn, crossed lake Michigan to New Buffalo, thence by railroad to Detroit, half a day by daylight so I had a view of the eastern half of the State - many pretty villages but scenery altogether too tame. Took Steamer from Detroit to Cleveland, there had to wait a day for a boat going to Erie - at this season the boats are irregular - my stay in Cleveland cost me, 75 but was extremely pleasant, A lady living two miles out of the city was at the hotel waiting for a boat to go west: her husband came in to the city with his buggy so she invited me to ride with them took me almost all over the city; to the cemetery which is beautiful: Cleveland lies high above the lake is finely laid out streets all of them six rods broad; - contains many superb residences with large gardens of shrubbery and flowers. It seems not so remarkable for trade and business as beauty of situation and as a place of residence for those whose only concern is to enjoy life. I have been here three days expect to start tomorrow, go by way of New York: a route I shall enjoy much: Mr. Rumsey unclear stay in N.Y. two days on business, and, though it will increase my expenses 4 or 5 dolls. I do not regret it: shall perhaps never have so good an opportunity again to see that place, with one to go around with me who is acquainted: - hope I shall hear Jenny Lind. I expect to be in Boston Sat. of this week: cannot you spend Sabbath there: if not cannot you be there in the course of the week following. I mean to stay in Boston a week or more. My journey west cost me nothing: my return will take quite a sum from my scanty purse: My expenses are increased by stopping here but my journey will be much more pleasant and I am willing to spend something for the sake of visiting New York. Shall go to Buffalo by stage from here, sixty miles, and to Boston by way of the Sound. Affly Anne

written up the left side: In Boston I intend stopping at Mr. Chase's No, 26 Elliot St. - have written her -- may stay some at Mr. C. Metcalf's.
