Dear Brother July 2nd, Your kind letter of 10th 25th ultimo duly received on 29th Am very much obliged for information in relation to Bangor & Waterville R. R. Should like much to get hold of said report, If you can send it to me I will thank & pay all expenses. To the stock of that Road taken up; How do Bangor men feel about it, Who are leading Capitalists, & the Engineers. Are you aware that awarding the palm of Elegance to Rufus Choate in preference to H B. Sargent, is probably blankly denying all your fire spun theories of Eloquence in one of your later letters. You did not hesitate quite enough. I never said I never read Jeremy Bentham, I guess. I never did much though. I have looked over some. What you call my "prejudices" may however be derived from better sources, than either his own or the injuriously worthless writings of some of his disiples in this country which I have read, While I think of it, Did you ever read the life of that same Jeremy Bentham? Better. He was undoubtedly a man of powerful mind. probably too of great heart though awfully warped, as a powerful mind he has undoubtedly had great influence, but in my opinions very far from beneficial influence. The mans' character was fundamentally wrong. his foundation & starting point wrong. Systems however ingenius, however powerfully supported, must fail in the end as Bentham's have done, if founded uppon & built with principle directly opposed to the foundation principles of Christianity. The principles of Christianity must be foundation even of the politics of this world. History proves it. France & Ireland England itself proves that henceforth it must be. Men did not go to Jeremy Bentham, thank God, to find the Constitution of the U.S. or the principles of our Government. Matrimony generly agree with & like your ideas & statements Have not now time or opportunity to write on that head, Will try to continue it. Remaineth in Man, all that inherent self control & responsibility with which he came from the and of his Creator? Precious Question Can he now govern himself? Aright?
