Racine May 15th 50 My own dear Mother I fear you are beginning to think me quite dilatory in answering your two good, most welcome letters but as I wrote to Almeda and Joseph just after receiving your last I thought best to wait a little then for two or three weeks the question was pending whether I remained here or went to Milwaukee to become ' a sort of private governess to a widower's children an Irish lawyer. I wrote Lucy a full account of the matter will not take room now to go into detail, only to say that I thought seriously of going, the salary would be more than I now receive, the labour and burdens less; probably, but the care and confinement would be incessant, I did not quite like the name and sound of it, now the looks & character of the man so I declined, but recommended Miss Bright, who had written me begging to find something to do , but my letter to her was delayed so the place was supplied before her answer reached me. Mrs. H. was when I told her about it very unwilling to have me go; her school is not so large, Mr. Hopkins is without a salary, and she wishes to journey east, means run short, so she wished do dispense with one teacher, having me stay, because I could manage the school better keep it along in her absence and

I have been attending a singing school sort of glee choir [unclear] presented

I purchased at Chicago a new shell comb ,and a barege [unclear] laise at 12 1/2 per yard;I have not bought may articles of dress since I came my Mantilla I have worn four summers and it is quite a genteel article now.
