Faith was defective - it was not the faith "which works by love and purifies the heart". It began and ended in selfishness. 2. Their morality was not pleasing to God since it consisted chiefly in a strict observance of outward ceremonies. There was no heart in it. 3. They depended not on Christ to save them but on their own good deeds and they seemed to have not one doubt of their acceptance with God on this ground of their own minds.
