Fortunately there was none of the Indians in sight I suppose they kept no watch deeming themselves secure in such an inaccessible place we drew back instantly not knowing but that we were seen and pursued. we commenced descending the hill with all the speed that we were capable of terror I suppose making us go quicker than we could under any other ? for we imagined every moment that they were after us and several times I thought I heard the dreaded whoop. It was not through cowardice that we ran in that manner I believe if any danger threatened us where the odds were not too great against us that at the time we would not have turned down that hill again but against that savage horde we would not have the least chance if they pursued us we would have fired off the first of them and then we could expect no mercy. it was that most prudent thing we could do to get away quietly if possible We reached the bottom of the hill without any signs of pursuit and we began to hope they had not seen us still we must proceed with the greatest caution for where there was such a large number of Indians as was evident by their wigwams we were liable at any moment to meet some straggling parties on the hunt. We traveled cautiously keeping a sharp lookout if we only heard a twig snap we stopped and reconoitered in every direction before proceeding we rounded the hill adding I suppose two miles to our journey and got unto our west course again without meeting any of the Indians.
