I am writing just what comes into my head without order or arrangement. The weather last month and this, has been extremely dry, but cold and dreary- the lake winds piercing and uncomfortable, spring is rather a dreary season here I think. Business is not as brisk as usual. the California excitement has taken away money as well as men from this region, and operated unfavourably. A part of of the Presbyterian church adhere to Mr. Hopkins, have left the meeting and hired the Court House, where we now attend, I sing alto famously: a subscription has commenced to build a church for the first Congregational Church; which is going rapidly forward,- There is a great division in feeling, bitterness,- One lady that I first became acquainted with and liked much, I now never see: she does not call here. A letter from Eliab reached me two or three weeks ago acknowledging receipt of draft I sent, I believe he has paid money for me to Mrs. Shepherd and perhaps more, he must see to that and do himself justice. I wish Mr. Furber would come this way. it could not take much longer, or cost more to come in the Michigan railroad to Chicago up the lake the Sheboyagan, where I suppose he lands: he would see much more of the 'West,' and I should see him. If it were not such an expensive journey I would go to see Olive in vacation first of July: if you and Samuel will come then I will go. I want very much to see the country west and mean to take a short journey at any rate. The region to the northwest of us in I suppose one of the finest in the world. There is a steady tide of immigration to all this region. Sat. Apr. 20 Received a letter from Isaac yesterday. I send a paper to Samuel: it is the meanest paper printed here
