I believe I wrote you something of the state of religion here. I did to Joseph. The Blessed Spirit of God has indeed been again bestowed upon Boudoin College, in some measure, and when we consider the states of those written it's walls who have professed Christ, we can only wonder that so much has been done. There has been no excitement, and but little said upon the subject, but the silent influence of the spirit has been working upon the minds of some. Some four or five of our class it is hoped have experienced a change of heart, and several of the other classes. The best part of the students too, those who stand high. The state of religion has been very low. For some time the number of professing Christians has been very small in comparison, and worse yet religion with them, little more than a name. Religion seemed to be left off, or thrown aside when one got to College as belonging somewhere else. It was the case with those of best education & principles, even those of whom there are usually many, who are preparing for the ministry. The first circle meeting I attended when I came back this spring. Thornton, a wild fellow last fall who had been converted in Vacation had returned a Christian. It was whispered that several were serious. A letter was received from the students at Bangor, most of whom you know from here number several last fall. They had heard of the state of things here, were anxious about it, had appointed special prayer meetings, and decided connect with the circle here. It was astonishing to see the apathy here. A motion was made to set apart 1/2 hour for special prayer, but the only effect was a long discussion when it should be & nothing was done! I could not help thinking even then that if the Holy Spirit was granted to connect sinners here, it must be seemingly almost in spite of those who ought to instruments in the work. Ch how much was the influence of Gods spirit needed here! How much is still needed! How far was I from God! If indeed I had ever
