excited the envy of their white neighbours. They were slandered. Their motives were impeached, and they were condemned for doing what the highest officers in the United States had recommended. It was said that they unclear words scratched outdispersed from their towns, and settled on separate farms, unclear they had no love for each other and were afraid to live together, -- that they had no word to express love, and that the worst white man made a kinder husband, than the best Indian. They said that learning made the Indians swindlers, and in insinuated the idea that missionaries taught them the art of swindling etc. And the improvement of their government was considered high treason against the United States. A government within a government! Horrid! All seemed to stand aghast at this awful monster; and nothing would do but the chiefs and national council must be crushed at once. It was made a capital unclear the legislature of Georgia for the council to convene within the chartered limits of that state, even on their own land, or for any offices to attempt to execute the laws of the nation. Many of the officers, for violating the above law in obedience to their own rules, were arrested and driven from place to place, and harrassed about as if real criminals. And in the meantime swindlers, of every description, were crowding into the country with liquor, cards, and fanciful goods, seducing the unsuspecting Cherokees into acts of impiety & disorder.
