I therefore write freely to you, that you may consult whether some thing cannot be done, even now, to guard against the evils which we fear you may have enquire why I did not state these difficulties before? The only reason was, I had no idea, till a few weeks ago, that mission improvements were to be paid for in a manner that would leave it probable for the people to say they paid for them. But as I would not produce any unnecessary excitement, I say, and intend to say, but little on the subject, except to missionaries, and such Cherokees as are in favor of removing.
