the Falls from this point. went up to the Cataract House which is the crack House here now back to the Clarendon House to wait for for the Train for Suspension Bridge. Snows hard. Whew! 2 O'clock P.M. started for the Bridge which is 2 miles from Niagara Depot. Paid toll unclear and went over into Canada to see the Great Western Depot. "Small Fry" compared with Buildings of the same kind in Massachusetts. The Bridge is worth seeing. it is 800 feet long supported by 4 wire cables 10 inches in diameter braced. and stayed in all directions and fastened over Towers built of Stone about 80 feet high into rock at a depth of 20 to 35 feet. the cars passed over me on the Bridge without much motion. or jar. a very little crackling noise was all that reminded me that a Train was passing. standing on the Bridge looking down 245 feet into the Niagara which roars like Thunder in it's restless tossings over the rocks below inclines to reflection on the great and good Being who holds the Universe in his Almighty hand. and the Bridge add another tribute to the genius of Man before whose power almost every obstacle seems to vanish. 4 O'clock P.M. walk up the Rail Road and get a very good view of the Falls at a distance of about half a mile. which is the nearest I can get at this time the snow being 3 feet deep on the level and no prospect of a road being opened for a week and I cannot wait so long. 8 O'clock P.M. conclude to go West tomorrow morning if it does not snow again tonight. hope it will not for I have stayed here housed up long enough. Tuesday Jany 15th Start from the Bridge at 11 O'clock A.M. on the Great Western broad gauge? Railway. Cars filled with "Bloody Dutchmen" "Canada Skunks" who fill the air with fragrance. this is what they call the Lightning Train I cannot tell what for it stops at almost every House and the only difference there seems to be between this and our roads is that the Houses are not so thick.
