established a Church here, In our walk of a few blocks to night we saw crossout--quite a great many beggars, some of them crippled, in Vera Cruz. I never saw so many badly deformed & crippled people. 25th--Had coffee & took a very long walk. Stopped & saw the Indian women making "Tortellios" a species of pan cake. They are made out of corn, worked & passed through different processes of grinding boiling & mixing with water till it becomes a pulp when it is made out in flat thin cakes & baked quickly--these cakes are peddled round the church crossout the Unclear as a bread, they have a very pleasant taste.--
