5th. The same respecting claims against individual Indians, with the addition of the number & amount of all presented by any one individual, their character and the grounds of the allowances and disallowances. The following information which could be procured without reference to the books & papers of the Commissioners, might be interesting & useful; viz]: a classification of all the expenditures under the treaty, according to the different and distinct heads under which they could me arranged, and the amount paid under each. This, however, would be a work of time & labour, as a reference would be necessary to each of the accounts, & to every separate voucher of payment, in order to ascertain the amount & character of each. In the prosecution of this investigation the amount paid for any particular object, that would be embraced under a mere general head, or the sum paid to any one or more individuals, and for what purpose could readily be ascertained. These accounts and vouchers are on file in the auditor's office. The amount received by Attornies for prosecuting the claims of Indians before the Commissioners cannot, in many cases, it is supposed, be ascertained at all -- in those for instance where they drew the whole amount awarded to the Indian, under a power of attorney , and settled with him in person for his compensation. The cases where the Commissioners awarded the attornies compensation and it was paid to them in the Cherokee country on the Commissioners' requisition, out of the amount allowed the Indians , and the amount, can be arrived at only by an examination of the accounts & vouchers of
