September 2nd Monday After breakfast copied program, and so on, preparatory to beginning school. Started to school at 7:40. Stopped at Mr. Strate's for key. Had dirty floor to sweep with an old broom. At 9:00 o'clock, rang bell, made a very short introductory, passed blank slips, assigned lessons and began work with 18 pupils present. At recess, Mr. Strate came in to see if anything was needed. Finished work and dismissed at 3:35. A little discouraged also encouraged. Swept, brought in kindling shut up and came home. Before I swept I sat down to rest and look over examination papers. First thing when I came home, went to the orchard, came in and lay down on the floor to rest, lighted lamp and wrote in this book.
