played cards until 10 1/2 oclock at night when we reached Vicksburg. Went on shore here, but the streets were so dark & rough & the hills so high that we did not venture very far. I was disappointed as I had hoped to see the place by day light. Took a Lemonade & went to bed at 12 oclock. 27th Beautiful day, spent it looking at the scenery, saw a great many fine plantations and a great many deserted negro quarters, went ashore at Natchez. Climbed a
