161 As I intended to make no stay at Mobile, I did not use any of the letters of introduction I had with me, thinking I could in a short time see more of the men and manners of the place if I accompanied a traveling acquaintance I had made in his calls upon the firms with which he had to transact business. I was four times during the morning invited, not to liquor, that expression I never once had heard in in America, but to take a drink. There is much heartiness of feeling here, & everybody carries out, to the full extent, this American unclear of shaking hands with every body, which is a rational way of expressing good will without saying any thing. I walked about a mile out into the environs to see the houses of the Merchants & well-to-do inhabitants.
