1866 Wednesday, January 17. On the train. Leave Cairo at 2 AM run 11 miles & hook ? check? down & lay ? until morning -- burning ? in the morning on the part of the passengers. Several cars off the track with considerable of a smash up & a poor prospect ahead. Get off about 2 PM & move slowly forward with nothing to eat except what is profered up at the stores at the stations. A good deal of grumbling. At night take sleeping car + retire with a prospect of a fair nights rest.
