Take citizen teamsters, unless you have reliable ones from among the enlisted men. Take all the new Pistol and Carbine ammunition that can be spared from the Post.
You may exercise your own judgment as to taking your Quartermaster Lawton with you. It is believed the building in Fort Clark is so nearly completed, that it may now be left in other hands, at all Events affairs at Fort Clark must yield, if necessary to present Emergency, and whatever there is at that Post, that will be useful to you in your Expedition, you can avail yourself of. If, as has been reported, you had had another attack of inflammatory rheumatism, and you find yourself unable to take field, nevertheless give the necessary orders, to start the Companies under Lieut. Colonel Hatch. I will in this event meet him myself at Concho and organize operations there. If, as I hope, the report is untrue, leae Lt. Col. Hatch in command at Fort Clark. If you think it unnecessary to leave a Company of your Regiment at Duncan, you can take both from there. Very respectfully Your obdt. servant (Sgd) C. C. Augur

Respectfully forwarded for the information of the Lieutenant General Commanding. As soon as I have seen Colonel MacKenzie and arranged with him a plan of operations, a copy of his instructions will be furnished. It takes so long to communicate with Posts by mail here - only on Tuesdays and Fridays to Fort Clark - that Col. MacKenzie cannot receive this order until Saturday night. It is possible too that he may have joined Bankhead, * who is out beyond the Pecos. There will then be some delay in starting this command, but I hope to get it out in time, to meet any advance of the Indians. (Sgd) C. C. Augur
