20 been notified that the President of the United States has instructed the proper law officers of the Government to take cognizance of your case.

         It is necessary that you be retained as at present, until such time as the law officers take action, which - it is presumed - will be an an early day, and when any opportunity will be afforded for your defense.
         Meanwhile, if there is anything the General can do, consistent with his authority to amelioriate in any way your condition, he holds himself ready an any moment to do it.

                    I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of March 26, 1872, relating to the case of Sergeant James Bush, 9" Cavy., and directing that he be paid for the time he was detained beyond the the date of expiration of enlistment.  I was awaiting the return of Paymaster, who was paying troops at Fort Davis, in order to see for what time Sergt. Bush was paid.  I new find, that he was paid only to Dec. 22, the date of expiration of enlistment, though actually discharged Jany. 2.
  I believe he received pay on his final statements, and I have no means of knowing his present whereabouts.  Should he enlist or should I learn
