Sullivan Introduction No one w-d now think of writing a continuous narrative
of travel in the United States of America. The only alternative hitherto adopted has been that of Essays on American subjects. But towards these the opinion of the reading public has not been so favourable as to make one desirous of adding to their number There appears , however, to be another form, as yet I believe untried, in which he who has traveled in a country, about which people know much, but from which they are still desirous of hearing something more may present to the reader what he has to say. He may write, I mean, somewhat in the fashion of a book of table-talk. This he may do by
