next day visited LeMars, Iowa, where my aunt and cousin live. This spot is about 35 miles NE of Sioux City. I found Sioux City much improved. The town used to have a population of 65,000, of whom it was said that 70,000 were prostitutes. A wide-open town up to the 30's. I used to see prostitutes with recognizable syphilis sores on the streets in 1917-18, when I was around there from time to time, but I worked for a few years in a small country station 30 miles north of Sioux City on the G.N.
Again thanks for the book and the daring Realists, Sincerely, F. Mead.
P.S: Not easy to get the Sun-Times in our neighborhood on Sundays. Yesterday's book section seems most paltry to me. Been seeing some excellent BBC films lately - TV. Forgot to say that I'll come your way this winter, but if you come to Chicago, let me know and you can stay here while in Chicago. I hear Europe-bound jets and incoming frequently, as O'Hare is directly west.
