  As mentioned before, that previous to the Mexican Revolution & even up to the settlement of Texas by the Austins, the  Mustang & a few indifferent Mexican Horses were the ony Horses in the Country.   The Settlers, many of whom brought into the country their saddle horses, a few for breeding & lastly when the Texan revolution broke out some good horses found their way from U.S. to Texas for the use of the Cavalry.  After the Battle of St Jacinto, cities & towns were founded with rapidity & amongst other ? improvements Road & Race Courses were established, for amusement and for the bettering the breed of horses.  at Galveston there is a ver good course with Stad & Stable.  Houston has its course, other towns have followed these examples & moreover the principal planters & farmers have formed courses on their lands, thus affording pleasure to the settlers & the means for improving the breed of horses.  

Friday 8 to day accompanied my kind host to a Horse race about a mile from the Hermitage. The race was for 500 dollars a ride, Diddle v. Mok-row, American horses, or what in England would be called ponies
