expedition having been weakened by permitting a part of it to be detached & the intrigues & treachery of Lewis the Artillery Commandant of this expedition ( & who broke his Masonic oath) The Expedition fell into the power of the Mexicans.   After a long captivity in Mexico, the greater number returned to Texas;  & some of them joined the Expedition under Somerville to the Rio Grande - The 'War Party' part crossed the Rio Grande & fought the ? of ?, they had the best of it, but somehow or other they entered into a capitulation with the Mexicans to permit them to return to Texas.
  The Mexicans made prisoners of War of them, & whilst marching the larger part them into the interior the ? on their guards, killed some & effected their escape.   They were re-captured, when Santana ordered them all to be shot;  this was protested against on the score of humanity by the U. S. & the British Minister, but the sanguinary Santana decimated them, shooting 17 or 18
