Cherokee syllabary is to the left and right of Ross's signature. To the left of John Ross's signature is the word "Ja-ni" in Cherokee syllabary, which translates to "John." To the right of his signature is syllabary characters spelling out "Gu-wi-s-gu-wi" (Koo-wi-s-gu-wi) or Cooweescoowee, which is John Ross's Cherokee name.
