chief, keeping his seat, then replied to the last speaker, the other chiefs to the following effect, viz. you have now put me in blood up to my knees. I shall not, however stain

my hands with the blood of infants, - of women, or old men, or any unable to defend themselves. But if I [[h..] the war whoop in my path, and see our enemies with like weapons in their hands, I will fight and subdue them or die in the conflict. You have made me A ska yu g ste ga, and I shall take care of my young warriors, and never engage in war without a sufficient cause." At the close of this speech, all in the house exclaimed aloud, Waw. The young warriors then, coming forward, took the young chief by the hand styling him their uncle. Also all the chiefs in the house did the same. When the young man retired, and together with the company about the council house, separated into seven companies and went to seven houses where victuals had been provided.

Victuals was also taken into the council house and placed before the seats of all the counsellors, both civil and military.  None must eat with them or in the house, except some strangers who might be present, and even these would not eat till the counsellors had eaten. But the new chief and the four men attending him, ate nothing all that day or night. He continued on his seat, and the four attendants kept near him; and all the chiefs of both orders, kept their seats, and watched with him.  Thus the night was observed as a vigil by all the national authorities. None left their seats. If water was wanted, boys were ready to fetch it, or do whatever was necessary.
The next day all continued as they had done throughout the night, till noon. Then the new chief descended from his seat, walked to the door, and said, "Now I am gone."  To

which all exclaimed, Waw. When the ? in authority of the war officers, saying the same and receiving the same response. In this manner individually left till the last. He then arose, went to the door, and said the same (without any reply) All the war chiefs them accompanied their leader to his house, where he? and his four attendants continued their fast till midnight and then all went to a stream and plunged entirely in the water seven times, and then returned to the house and ? & the ceremony closed.

 During all the above ceremonies the whole company must be solemn and still. Any rude & light behaviour was punished.
