Section of stem.

The Ojibway Medecine Man. while he performs his cures much in the same way as the Dakota is still very widely removed from him in his methods. He uses herbs and nostrums he resorts to charms and amulets the belief in actual occupancy of the body by the evil spirits is discredited. and his efforts are not so much directed to the expulsion evil spirits as to bugs which he alleges have gotten into the patient. He effects his cure by driving out the "bugs" and by supplications to the "Great Spirit.". For that purpose he employs the drums. of which we will speak later.

Phlebotomy is practiced among them. if an indian thinks he has too much blood the medecine man or a squaw skilled in the art will bleed the patient. for this purpose they use a piece of [?horn?] similar to the horn for loading the gun. see chapter "War Weapons & the Chase" except that it has a small hole in te end. over a slight cut the wide end of the horn is placed and held firmly the lips are then applied to the small end. and blood is drawn till the operator thinks the horn is full. then the finger is placed on the small end and the patient righted up and the horn removed. and emptied. This is repeated till enough blood is taken.
To cure headache and neuralgia The grated root of the herb known as "Indian root" or Prasira Brava." this is a medecine not grown by the indians and is a scarce drug but very highly prized by them. this is mixed with water and other things in a small "case" or birch bark [?dish?] and in the mixture is dipped the tattooing needle" these are four needles secured to a piece of pine stick." and the skin over the affected part is pricked with the needles. This tattooing medecine contains as one of its ingredients some of the herb "A sha.sha.we.sh.kak" "Squaws root." This is one of the cornflower family and is considered of great value as a medecine it is made an ingredient of all their nostrums. and drinks when it can be had. It is cultivated by the wise ones. and sold at good prices to the layety.
