74 30th - For some days past there has been very heavy rains accompanied with lightning & thunder & strong breezes from N.E. Although Agues have visited Texas from the Sabine to the Colorado pretty intensively this year, there has not been one case of Chills & fever here. Monsr. Castros Emigrants many of whom travelled up to this section of country during the heats of Summer fell sick & several have died. Some of them believed the rigid diet was the best course to pursue, this debilitated them when they ought to have lived generously - say upon good corn bread milk game & beef, of which there was & is plenty of here, they preferred a small quantity of wheaten bread and cabbage soup.
