22 San Antonio passed through this place. This appears to be a likely spot to thrive, & was doing well whilst the government was at Austin. It is situated on a high prairie & towards the East the Colorado Hills are only distant two or three miles & covered with timbers, being composed [?on?] the surface of x It is considered healthy & every species of vegetation comes up most luxuriantly. There is only one store for dry goods in the town, & this was full of Tonkeways, bartering their buffalo robes, deer skins, Moccasins &c, for Powder, cotton stuffs Bead's & such like finery for their Squaws & an occasional bottle of Whiskey from the tippling shop; this last is against executive orders. One of the Indians was a very ugly likiness of Mr Macready the actor. At Bastrop I found a countryman Mr N __ for whose attentions I feel obliged. I had the honor of an introduction to the Vice-President of Texas General Burleson, who invited me on my return from Austin to pay him a visit.
