20 I was Kindly received at Mr. M ___ & seldom I think his hospitality had been more timely given for I had not often been so fatigued & had not eaten anything all day; An excellent supper & a good feather bed put me all to rights. 22nd Early in the Morning a Young Tonkeway indian came to Mr M's begging for milk & some meat; My host was just going to morning prayers; he told the indian to wait; down he squatted on his haunches by my side, his gun between his legs, only being encumbered as to habitments will the girdle round the loins & a long narrow stripe of cloth hanging before & behind his face well painted with vermillion presented a pretty god picture of an indian.

When Mr. M __ commenced praying, I put my hands over my eyes, the indian did the same, but peeping thro' his fingers apparently.
