He was introduced to the concourse by a venerable citizen in a speech full of kindness in regard to the /Ex. President of the Republic. General La Mar returned thanks for the great honor done him & entered into a narrative of the various acts of his administration, complaining somewhat of vindictiveness on the part of those now in power - he thanked those he saw around him & was very happy in some compliments to the ladies present. [The Gentleman who introduced the General to the assembled citizens stood up saying "Three cheers for General Lamar" whether it was the suffocating heat of the weather or any other cause, there was no response] The good things of this life were speedily put on the tables, all
