Hillsdale, Mich, March 26, 1885 My dear nephew,

This is the warmest morning we have had since I have been here - ther. 37° above - It is over 40 now at 7 am. The sky is not-clear and we have had no sight of the sun today- About four years ago a young girl who lived in the next house above this slipped on the ice on the side walk while playing - at first it was thought the injury was not serious only the ankle sprained - but it never got well and for about a year she was in the hospital in Cleveland, O. - Yesterday her body was brought home and she is to be buried today - She was 20 yrs. old - the baby and pet of a large family- This morning, Claire who sleeps with me, and got up at our usual hour and on coming down stairs found all quiet - no one stirring and no fires - I built the fire and Claire begged to call her uncle Holden & Hattie - and as it was near 7 I let her rap on their door - College exercises are at 7-45 and I feared he might be tardy -Then we went to Lizzie's room

top margin: How are your public rooms at college warmed? Have they a furnace? Are your museum, labratory &c left cold and unused much of the winter time? With much love - your aunt Jennie Everett Marjory is better but Mable has come down with the scarlet fever hope not to have her very sick unclear unclear ! J.C.
