The Baptist Minster is doubtless well supported, and is probably among the best of his Sect in Southern Illinois. He is an Exhorter rather than a demoniser, and I cannot say that I like his preaching much. The Methodist Minister I like better. He is a regular thorough going disciple of John Wesley, zealous, enthusiastic and untiring, but I presume can preach twenty sermons in a week just as well as two. He has not much Education of course, and is apparently rather mediocre except in zeal, and in that the Methodists as a Sect appear to excel. In some respects I like the Methodists much and on the whole, I think better than the Baptists. But my favorite preacher is rather a big old German "Father Krack" who preaches here once a month. He belongs to the Lutheran Church; His English is not by any means perfect, but he is a man of large intellect as well as person, and I judge well educated. His preaching is the best here. The Methodist Circuit rider preaches here but one half the Sabbath, Father Krack, one fourth, the Baptist preaches here all the time. Today at that church however preached or tried to a Baptist Colporteur, he did little else however than shout, and I enjoyed it but very little. The Sabbath services here are always at Eleven o clock and at candlelight, never in the afternoon. So I usually spend some part at least of the afternoon very pleasantly in writing letters, either to you or to Mother
