Gertie has been very sick. I guess that a week ago, they pretty much gave her up, the Dr & All. They have had Dr Payne all the time, but they left off giving her Medecine and she got better fast. Sunday morning they thought her worse again, but she got better and yesterday seemed quite smart, but I suspect she ate too much perhaps and today is worse--the discharges frequent have returned, and they are again quite alarmed. I am extremely sorry for them. Their state of mind is bad one. The child is quite sick, and they do not know what to do for her. They have lost lost confidence in all the physicians, and do not know any thing what to do. The fact is there is scarcely any thing more desirable--more entirely essential to any mental comfort--than Faith--First I suppose is faith in religion--in ones religious teaching, and system; and next certainly to that much be ranked faith in one's physicians. In fact as we most of us, I am afraid, have a bad habit of thinking more of our bodies & what concerns them, than of our souls, & their interests. I am by no means sure that we do not at present suffer more from lack of faith in our doctors than from lack of religious faith.
