I do'nt care much about it, though it provoked me some at the time to see others, who know almost nothing at all of the years studies, pass off smoothly, while I stopped. However it is very frequently the case that the best scholars, having the hardest things given them come off worst. That day, several good mathematicians had to have new problems. However, Examination only marks on the Rank Books as much as four weeks recitations! and as I am absent so much, I can not expect to take a very high rank. After Examination I slept an hour or two, felt better and went to our class Supper &c. Oration G.G. Richardson, Poem J.S. Whiting, Odes by Hatch, Jordan, Wiley and Smith, Supper & Desert, Eating & drinking, Toasts & Speeches, ad infinitum only $.75 apeice. I went to bed at 3 oclock. Next day I was invited by a friend to ride up to Lewiston with him, 20 miles, take a carriage back, no expense. Pleasant ride, beautiful place, falls &c. Rode back in the Evening Hours, It was day of the Freshman Examination, Class Supper, then their Annual Bonfire & 7 bbls Tar. So I was up all night, laid down a little at 5 A.M. I guess I felt sore all over for a few days. I had a good deal of business to attend to for the Succeeding week I was there, for the Societies and boarding Club. Commencement was hardly as good as usual. It was held in the new church unfinished, loose floor, stagings &c. all 'in status quo' It is an awful great house, then so noisy you could hardly hear much. Tuesday 2d, Peucinian Anniversary. Oration by Rev. E.W. Peabody of N Bedford Ms was very superior. Wed. Exercises of the Graduating class, said to be of a very high order. Athenaean Oration, expected from Geo. S. Lunt Esq, of Newburyport, did not come. However the Anniversary meeting & supper was most Glorious. Abundance of Speeches &c from many great men & witty men &c. That by DKE (in greek letters, Delta Kappa Epsilon, kept me up considerable. Thurs. there is usually an oration before the Alumni, and one before the (in Greek letters Phi Beta Kappa. Both failed
