You may well suppose there is quite a variety in human nature, even in this small number, for one's observations: we hear lectures from distinguished men almost every morning, on various topics connected with religious education, the ministers here, Mr. Gallaudet several times, - a delightful man, - Miss Brerker and others, Ive visit schools which are excellent here, particularly Mr. Beecher's high School, where I have heard many fine exercises in Gram. & lectures on Philosophy. I have visited the deaf & dumb as asylum, 204 pupils, eleven schoolrooms & teachers, some of them mutes; it was very interesting: Julia Brace bliind mute, sat sewing on a dress, threaded her needle with her tongue: in the workshop was nice furniture shoes &c. made by the pupils. Hartford is a pretty place, deep heavy foliage, and handsome dwellings; the class took tea last Tuesday by invitation at the home of one of the wealthiest families, a palace like house, when we met Mrs. Sigourney and some others of the elite of the place: she is a lovely looking lady, very unassuming, I had a little chat with her. I observed a peaceful, easy naturalness of manners, differing much from the artificial manners of Bangor: - this simplicity I think the perfection of high breeding.
