33 Tuesday [sic] Feby 25th

another beautiful day and of course abundance of mud so that getting about the streets, on the ugly side-walks and something they call flag stones (but which I think a very poor apology) is about like performing on a slack rope - and I think by the time I am ready to go home I shall be quite a performer- Journalised and Posted Mr Adams' Books this forenoon P.M. went to School this afternoon but could not study the students were all full of the "Old Harry" or something else and the Principal seemed to have no control over them and at 4 Oclock I gave it up as a bad job -

Tuesday Feby 26th

a most beautiful day It seems like spring and were I at home I should expect to hear the Birds singing - but here they have nothing but Prairie chickens and Crows - none of those little birds that cheer the heart in New England - I have finally got a letter from my dear friend Lewis and am full of joy to learn that my friends at home are all well - received a line from Teen and Martha which was very pleasing - the forenooon was spent in School to very good advantage - P.M cloud and looks likely to rain if it should rain for a short time it would make the river snap which would be very agreeable to me for unless I get into some kind of business by the time I get through at the College I shall want to be moving.

Wednesday Feby 27th

It snowed last night just for variety but I guess it will not make out much - it does beat me - such changes from hot to cold I am not accustomed to even in changeable Masachusetts - P.M. it has cleared away and seems rather pleasant but rather cold for comfort after having a few days so warm. - the longer I stay here the more I am impressed that this is not the place for me to settle - there is system of doing business that I do not like - the chief aim seems to be to make all you can out of everybody. - friend or foe - in regard to the people as social beings I think very favorably of them - they seem to try to make one as happy as possible sparing no pain to make a strangers stay pleasant
