May 19th -- Was informed that two companies of volunteers were gathered near the line in the state of Arkansaw, to come into the nation and arrest? a Cherokee for whipping a white man. The white man, it seems had endeavoured to steal some black people from the Cherokee. Thus the prospect of a settled home for the Cherokees, in this country is very precarious, even if they should not die with sickness

May 23. Was informed by Maj Lowry that, according to the most accurate estimation they could make, about five thousand Cherokees had died since they were taken prisoners last June. Of the three detachments sent from Ross landing last summer, it is estimated that two thousand are now in eternity. Of those, left till unclear it is said about two thousand died while in captivity, previous to their departure; and about one thousand on their way to this country. The above estimate may be a little more or less than the fact, yet we cannot suppose it far out of the way. The mortality of Bra??unclear church alone, including adults and baptized children, during a few months last year. I think twice, if not three times as great, as that of all the Presbyterian churches in the nation for fifteen years previous.
