Mother Metcalf Bangor Dec. 1856 Elyria My Dear Children I suppose you have heard of my being suddenly & violently sick with inflammation in chest - the Pleurie Liner (sic) & I don't know what not inflam'd (sic) right lung entirely in active (perhaps I don't express it right) But the pain was dreadful & the [words unclear] of brain in half sleep almost as bad - after trying Dr. Paine as was rather E. Cherie awhile he went for Dr. Mc[?] - He thought I might not live but a day or two - among other remedys (sic) they put flannel wet in boiling hot lineament or as hot as fingers could get it on to my side & shoulder from the 5th day it subsided very fast - and - b y absorption a very uncommon case the Dr. said especially in a person so old They wrote to C. he came & stay'd 4 days, walking &c with utmost solicitude O I have had every care & attention - What Children I have - was ever Mother so bless'd & Hattie so efficient - good & kind
