The Committee & Council in General Council convened to whom a letter has been referred by the Principal Chief, addressed "to the chief, Head Men & Warriors" under the signature of "John F. Schermerhorn, Commissioner to treat with the Cherokee East"
Resolved, that they see no reason for departing from the nation, in communications of their nature, and therefore they return the letter of [[unclear]] [[unclear]] to to the Principal Chief, with the desire that he will, together with the executive Council, answer the [[aforesaid?]] letter in such manner as they may think a desireable; and then the Committee & Council will act upon the result.  
Resolved, that they see no reason for departing from the customary forms of the nation, in communications of this nature, and therefore they return the letter of Mr. Schermerhorn to to the Principal Chief, with the desire that he will, together with the Executive Council, answer the aforesaid letter in such manner as they may think a desireable; and then the Committee & Council will act upon the result.

In obedience to the enclosed resolution, if become our duty to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterdays date. We are ready to recieve & [[unclear]] any distinct prosposition from the President in relation to a Treaty, and must sincerely shall we rejoice if terms are offered by which the nation may be relieved. But we understand from your communication theat you are already aware how unnecessary it will be, again to [[unclear]] the sentimentof the people upon the treaty you have already proposed and to which they have altogether objected.
