We did not get of the cars until daylight this morning.  We then crossed over to and island and are here yet.  We have drawn no rations yet but I traded my portfolio for a piece of corn bread.  And my gold pen for which I had no holder for a [[unclear]] of meal.  One of the prisoners [[unclear]] off the cars last night and though he was twice fired at escaped may God speed him to our lines.

We drew hard bread said to be four days rations, eighteen crackers, a little thicker but not more substance than one of Uncle Sam's crackers, if these are for four days we have drawn just about one third as much as we would in our lives for the same length of time.  We also drew some bacon which is pretty good [[unclear]].  This is also to last four days about half what we would get from our government for the same time. 1/4 of a pound of breads looks small to march a day upon but I suppose we can stand it.  Mr. [[Storaloff?]] has given out and has been sent to one of the [[unclear]].
