to meet the Chiefs of the opposite party in open council, to take them by the hand as friends & brothers, and, in a peaceful manner, to adjust the differences existing between the two parties.  The Captain told Mr Ross it would be satisfactory to Gen: Arbuckle & the Chiefs who were waiting at the fort to know thus much, and he hoped he would send definite answer to their several propositions (some of which he thought required the most serious deliberation), as soon as the opinions of the chiefs of his own party could be made up.  To this the Captain adds, Mr Ross consented, saying that Gen: Arbuckle might expect his answer by the evening of the 1st of July.
