Osawatomie, Dec. 13, 1884. I can only write a few minutes. I was quite depressed by the result of the election, and I can hardly get reconciled to it. It did me good to hear that you voted for Blaine. I think St. John's canvass was a great mistake, to say the least - perhaps one of those blunders that are almost as quite a crime. He lowered himself in my estimation very much indeed not by being a candidate, but by his untruthfulness and unfairness. I remember in one of his speeches he defended himself for his one-sided attack on the Republican party and candidates by saying that the Democrats had not had enough to do with making laws to " break with a setting
