On the invention and definition of Philosophy

Philosophy was invented by Thales of Miletus, by Italian Pythagoras, by Anaxagoras and by the most wise Socrates; of whom excellence, & dignity some exhibited [in/with] these parts PHILOSOPHY, is the most beautiful gift of GOD; another certainly, that Lucrecius Book 5, they celebrated [with?] their [manhoods?].

For if, that he begged himself known of the things, It ought to be said, [ille=demonstrative, he] was a God, a God, glorious [G.] Memmius, who First of life; found that reasoning, what Now is named Wisdom; and who through the craft, from such strong waves, and such darkness, moored life in [havens] so calm, & light so clear.
