February, Tuesday, 24. 1863. Pleasant day. Quite a fire in town. Learned of a fight at Greenville & that Maj Mudd was killed. Sent up the Regiment 3d Brigade Genl Grant came up today. Rode over to the 2nd Brigade & made a pleasant [[unclear]] call returned [[unclear]]

Wednesday, 25. Learn that Maj Mudd was not killed as was reported. Regiments returned from up the river. Our forces successful. Rained some. Heavy shower. Learned that a big boat [[towed??]] two mortar boats by the batteries of Vicksburg. Think I heard the firing in the night last night
 
Thursday, 26. Sure stormy. Read letters from Bro Burns & from A. G. Bun. Wrote to Sherman & to Dairus-quiet nothing doing. River rising rapidly & the [[unclear]] To what the levee to prevent overflow. Reading & playing spend the day
