Passed down the river today and arrived at the fleet near Vicksburg at 20 or 3 o'clock. Vicksburg is in fair river & presents a rather fine appearance. Saw Gen'l Sherman. Learn but little news. Col Stewart 15th Ill Cav was killed in a skirmish today. | |||

Today went to Gen'l [[McClnrands]] H'dQrs [[headquarters]] but did not see him. Went down the [[corral ?]] while there a boat come up the river & was fired at & the enemies batteries replied & some shells fell [[unclear]] where I stood. [[Of the bout]] the St Vicksburg. | |||
