Long ago the Indians were afflicted with some very awful diseases which do not now prevail. One of these differed from the small pox, or yours, yet occasioned dreadful sores in the flesh. When anyone in a family was ta- -ken with that disorder, the diseased person was removed, and had a hut, a tent, raised at a distance from any other habitation, and there lived alone. Then the priest was sent for, to cleanse the dwelling just left by the diseased, as if some person had died in it. After this, should any one touch the diseased, he would be unclean, as if he had touched a dead body. (Footnote a) In travelling through the wilderness, the "A, you, uh, a" took the lead. Each tribe marched by itself and encamped separately. Also, each clan kept distinct, without inter- -mingling with other clans of the same tribe.
